SPANISH WINE IS #1
SPANISH WINES are finally catching on as the country is now the world’s most popular winemaker, according to a new report. The country accounted for 2.4 billion liters sold in 2O15 versus 2 billion liters of French wine sold, according to a report in the INDEPENDENT, citing the Spanish Wine Market Observatory. However, despite selling more wine, Spain collected just 2.6 billion euros, or $2.8 billion, in comparison to 8 billion euros for France, or $8.7 billion, according to the publication. “The situation is frustrating, but we know what we have to do to catch up,” Rafael del Rey, the head of the Spanish Wine Market Observatory, said. “We need to sell less wine in bulk to other producers and more Spanish wine that indicates origin.” Del Ray says Italy was in the same situation as Spain 15 years ago, but now Italian producers have doubled their average price. “The Spanish wine industry will look very different in 1O years’ time,” he said. The news of the success of Spanish vinters comes as a recently released report showed wine is rising in popularity among Millennials.
