ENDANGERED COCKTAIL OF THE MONTH: THE TIPPERARY
EVERYONE feels a little Irish this month, what with St. Patrick’s Day being one of Massachusetts’ favorite drinking holidays!
It also happens to be a for-real holiday in the Bay State: Evacuation Day, established to commemorate the day when British troops evacuated Boston during the Revolutionary War. It ended an 11-month siege of our fair city and was the first major victory for George Washington and his Continental Army. The large Irish population in Boston played no small part in turning St. Paddys/Evacuation Day into an official holiday. A law officiating the holiday was even signed in black and green ink in 1941.
Another cause for celebration this year is the phenomenal growth of the Irish whiskey category as a whole. Irish whiskey was once the world’s most popular whiskey. A World War, an Irish Civil War and American Prohibition nearly squashed the category. Over the last decade or so Irish whiskey has been on the uptick, becoming the fastest growing alcohol category, thanks largely to a the well known brand – Jameson.
We LUPEC ladies look forward to more brands and styles of whiskey to come to us from the Emerald Isle, with new distilleries popping up and more products becoming available stateside. Dublin, for example, was once home to over 37 distilleries, but the last still within the city limits ran dry in 1976. This year the Teeling family, who have been making whiskey since 1782, will be setting up shop in Dublin’s city center once again, just a stone’s throw from the site of where the family’s first distillery was erected in 1782. Teeling will be the first distillery to open in Dublin’s city limits in 125 years.
Grab a bottle and mix it into this fine libation as you celebrate on March 17.
THE TIPPERARY
2 ounces of Irish whiskey (we suggest Teeling)
¾ ounce of Sweet vermouth (we suggest Carpano Antica)
½ ounce of Green Chartreuse
Stir ingredients in a mixing glass with ice.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Garnish with lemon twist.
