WEE JANIE’S SCOTCH SETS THE RECORD

It just goes to show that collectors will drop nearly any sum of money for bottles of rare wine and spirits. A bottle of Glenfiddich Janet Sheed Roberts Reserve Single Malt Whisky soldatauction on March 15 for a record-breaking $94,OOO in celebration of the distillery’s 125th anniversary. The bottle, one of only 11 in the world, broke the record for the most expensive bottle of whisky ever sold at auction. The event, held on New York’s Liberty Island, was hosted by actor and environmentalist Adrian Grenier and Glenfiddich Malt Master Brian Kinsman. Proceeds benefited SHFT Initiatives, the charitable arm of SHFT, which was founded by Grenier to promote sustainability issues through the intersection of commerce, art and design and communication. This whisky was created in late 2O11 to commemorate the 11Oth birthday of Janet Sheed (The Wee Janie) Roberts, granddaughter of Glenfiddich founder William Grant. Two other bottles sold for £46,85O (US $75,164) and £44,OOO (US $7O,592) at separate auctions. Of course, the real question is: when do you crack it open and enjoy a drink?
