IS MASSACHUSETTS THE NEXT CALIFORNIA?

Probably not, but there are an awful lot of vineyards in the Bay State these days and the number keeps growing. High interest in locally-grown products and the relaxation of alcohol regulations are helping to grow the number of wineries – there are currently a record 36 wineries operating across the state; seven of which have opened since 2OO7. According to the State Department of Agriculture, wine production increased by 21% between 2OO7 and 2O1O. And it’s not just “New England” style wines such as cranberry and apple which are popular – wineries that produce traditional grape wines are succeeding as well. The industry has continued to grow as winery owners use a variety of methods, from social media to tastings, to introduce their products to the public. Being able to ship wines out of state has helped sales as well. Additionally, a new state law that went into effect this year allows for wineries to sell their products at farmers’ markets, giving them an inexpensive way to promote their wines.
