ENDANGERED COCKTAIL OF THE MONTH: COCKTAIL RATIOS

Recently a handsome gentleman – who knows his way around ladies but not around cocktails – asked me to teach him how to make a Margarita. “I can do better than that,” I said, “I can teach you how to make any citrus-y concoction your little heart desires.”  True mixology is an art form requiring a more sophisticated palate than mine. But I can make a yummy drink any time, anywhere and so can you. All you need to remember is 2-1-1. Two parts strong + 1 part sweet + 1 part sour will pretty much get you in the vicinity of deliciousness. Good bartenders always taste their concoctions, so from here you’d want to have a little sample sip, then determine if you need a little more of any part of the equation.  Put a little rye or bourbon, simple syrup, and lemon to the test and you’ve found your way to a whiskey sour. Swap in Applejack and grenadine and you’re sampling a Jack Rose. Sub tequila, triple sec, and lime and what do you have? A Margarita.  It’s as simple as that, and a template you’ll begin to recognize as you mix up classic drinks at home. Fill in the blanks and give it a spin!

MARGARITA
2 ounces of silver tequila
1 ounce of triple sec
¾ ounces of fresh lime juice
Shake ingredients with ice.
Serve on the rocks in an Old Fashioned glass.
