POURING WINE DOWN the DRAIN

The notion of wasting wine seems, well, wasteful.  And yet, in these tough economic times, many British are doing just that.  According to figures from the Waste & Resource Action Program (WRAP), British households are pouring an estimated £47O million worth of wine down the drain every year.  As part of a campaign to reduce Britain’s carbon footprint, the government is urging people to freeze leftover wine and use it in cooking sauces and casseroles.  The newest data from WRAP shows that 1.8 million tons of food and drink from households ends up in sewers, of which some 1.5 million tons of waste, valued at £2.7 billion, could have been avoided through better storage or planning.  Let’s hope we Americans practice better conservancy!
