HANGOVER FREE SPIRITS

WHISKY with no HANGOVER? Sounds too good to be true. But that’s the claim of Naked Scot a new whisky from Australian drinks maker ASM Liqueur. Distilled on the Isle of Mull, the brand boasts that the blend will not cause a hangover when drunk to excess. ASM believes that spirits without chemicals make for fewer hangovers and say their new whisky is free from herbicides, pesticides and fungicides. The company also has a range of spirits that includes Vodka O, Kinky Nero dark rum, Kinky Lux white rum, Jinn Dry Gin, and Tequila Blu. However, the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) is outraged at the tacit implication that other whiskies contain pesticides. A spokesperson for the SWA said: “The claim is misleading because the science of distillation means there is no question of ‘residual herbicides, pesticides and fungicides’ being in any bottle of Scotch whisky.” The group also added there is some doubt over whether Naked Scot is a single malt or a blend. The spokesperson said: “It is a good example of why the new Scotch whisky regulations – which should be implemented later this year – are needed to avoid consumer confusion. The regulations will require that it is made clear on the label the category of Scotch whisky.” Launched in January, the whisky and the promise of “no hangover” has piqued imbibers’ interest and created a buzz among enthusiasts on the Edinburgh Whisky Blog. Buzz aside, there’s no proven link between pesticides and other chemicals having an impact on hangovers. According to health experts, the major cause of a hangover is dehydration – which can trigger headaches, a dry mouth and nausea. In all reality, moderation is really the only proven method for staving off hangovers.
