TEQUILA JOINS THE BILLION DOLLAR CLUB
IT WOULD seem we can’t get enough tequila these days. Tequila exports exceeded US$1 billion for the first time in history, the National Chamber of the Tequila industry (CNIT) has reported. Exports of Mexico’s native spirit grew by 1O% from US$997 million in 2O13 to US$1.1 billion in 2O14. Volumes being exported also grew, but at a slower rate, increasing by 2% from 171 to 175 million liters in 2O14 compared to the year before. The CNIT has also predicted export volumes will grow a further 3% in 2O15 reaching 18O million liters. Earlier this year it was reported global exports rose by double digits in the first half of 2O14 as Chinese consumers began to latch on.
