NEW FAD: DIET BUBBLY

THERE’S SOMETHING NEW out there in the world of wine for the uber calorie-conscious: An English company called Thomson & Scott has created “Skinny Prosecco” and “Skinny Champagne”, which claim to be “healthier” than regular bubbly thanks to less added sugar. Currently only available in the UK, the new line was launched in the spring and quickly started flying off the shelves and selling out online. The company is in talks to expand its distribution in the UK. “We laughed when we were called the ‘basic bitch drink of the summer’ in the media but demand has been off the scale” said creator Amanda Thomson. To be clear, the vast majority of Brut style Proseccos and Champagnes are on the lower sugar/calorie count side. A typical glass of Prosecco has around 😯 calories and 12 to 15 grams of sugar per liter. Thomson’s Prosecco claims to have seven grams of sugar per liter. Retail for the Prosecco is $22.75 a bottle. Whether there’s legitimate staying power to the low-cal sparkling wines or it’s just a niche fad remains to be seen but don’t be surprised if you see Skinny Prosecco showing up in the US in 2O17.
