NEW WORKOUT FAD: PROTEIN BEER?

TORN BETWEEN going to the gym and having a beer? Now you can do both! MuscleFood, a UK business that sells sports nutrition products, is marketing a high-protein, low-cal, gluten-free beer that boasts a whopping 21.8 grams of protein per bottle, about as much as eight ounces of Greek yogurt or three extra-large eggs. The beer, Barbell Brew, has 92 calories and 1.65 grams of carbs. By comparison, Amstel Light has 95 calories and 5 grams of carbs. It’s not cheap though, retail price is £15.95 per six-pack (US $22.24). This is not the first time that someone has tried to make beer healthy: A Kickstarter campaign last year for Protein Beer (AKA “Brewtien”) garnered some press but ultimately failed. And for years, health experts have been saying that beer may be good for you – whether it is for protein and B vitamins, increased brain function, heart health, or kidney-stone prevention. For the time being, Barbell Brew is only available in the UK but don’t be surprised to see something similar popping up on shelves here in the not-too-distant future.
